What is a Hackathon?

The Hackathon is a major part of ETH Taipei, but what exactly is a Hackathon?

A hackathon is a social coding event where programmers and developers can collaborate to either achieve a goal, improve their projects, or build new ones. The name, as you can probably guess, derives from the words “hacking” and “marathon”, marking the characteristic of a hackathon being an endurance event for programmers.

Hackathons are not only a place for programmers to innovate and work together, but also one where investors or sponsors can find new ideas or talent. People often give presentations at hackathons to showcase projects or developments by their product/company or to endorse themselves as prominent talent within the industry. Many of the people at hackathons are interested in networking, and hackathons, like all the different crypto conferences, are a great place to connect with people.

Generally, a hackathon will begin with an introduction explaining the rules and everything about the event. Following the introduction will be when people can throw ideas around and form teams to collaborate. After the projects are finished or the time limit is up, these teams will present their product/project and be judged for their work! The entire process encourages networking and working together to create something new.

In essence, a hackathon is a coding networking party where innovations can flourish, and connections are made.

Where Can You Find Hackathons?

Hackathons can be found at almost every major Web3 or Blockchain conference/event. A good example would be something like ETH Taipei or ETH Denver where the focal point for the events is the hackathons.

There are also websites dedicated to finding hackathons that you can use. Hackathon.com and HackerEarth are two websites dedicated to providing you with a list of hackathons from all over the world. There are also local/global Facebook groups and other online forums like Reddit where you can find hackathons near you. All you need to do is search through all the available ones and find one you are interested in!

ETH Taipei in particular will also hold hackathons that you can participate in! The hackathons at this year’s ETH Taipei will all feature a series of workshops that will lead into the “Hack Time” session where you will be able to work together to earn bounties! Definitely check them out!

What’s the Point of Joining Hackathons?

There are many pros to joining a hackathon, but the top reasons are gaining experience, networking, and earning prizes.

Gaining experience: Hackathons provide an environment in which participants can get hands-on experience. These events allow you to innovate and develop new skills or polish your current skills to an even higher level. The best way to get better at programming or coding is to get practice; especially practice with clear and challenging goals that push you not only to think outside the box but also prove that you have the stamina and potential to see the project through.

Networking: These events are the prime hub for individuals of similar interests and goals to connect and collaborate. A lot of partnerships are often formed through these hackathons, and it’s a great resource for finding future partners, employees, or employers. It’s a place for you to catch the eyes of recruiters and open up your options for future career choices.

Earning prizes: The prizes from these events can be great. Whether it’s monetary rewards or something else completely (Exclusive products, opportunities, etc), the reward is almost always worth the time and effort spent. There are even those who attend hackathons purely to win prizes as a side income or hobby!
